Wk 13 – Sustainable Art and Ephemeral Art

  1. For the sustainable art creation I chose to create a functional piece of art in the form of a mask. There are many tutorials online right now describing how to make a “no sew” face mask from a bandana or t shirt but personally these were not appealing to me. I wanted to create something that would make me feel less anxious and sad about having to wear a mask so I decided to sew my own in fun fabrics and patterns. For the ephemeral art I decided to sketch something and set it on fire because it seemed therapeutic to create something and let it go immediately after.
  2. I chose to use the fabric from the colorful scrub sets I am unable to wear at my current job. Instead of hanging in my closet unused like they have been for the past year and a half I can actually put them to good use.
  3. I think I accomplished my goal of creating practical art that takes some of the fear out of wearing a mask in public. The mask itself is functional and the colors are bright and fun. The ephemeral art was accomplished because it was truly temporary.
  4. A kiss should last as long as it feels right.
  5. For me, I wish a great meal lasted forever.
  6. A work of art should exist until its purpose is fulfilled.
  7. A marriage should last as long as it is healthy and happy for both individuals involved.
  8. I don’t know how long a human life should last. I’m still trying to figure that one out.
  9. Of course the certainty of death makes us experience things differently if we acknowledge it. At the center Puritan culture is the idea of memento mori – or reminders (commonly in the form of art) of the inevitability of death. Puritans strived to live a pious and good life as they could be stricken dead at any moment without opportunity to repent for any sins. If we were to acknowledge the certainty of death in our everyday lives instead of shying away from it I’m sure we would experience the world differently.
  10. Things essential to life such as clean air, water, and land should be sustainable and long lasting. We should all collectively be making an effort to ensure that these things are available for generations to come.
  11. I think it is possible for a singular person to make a change in a global issue. At the beginning of every large change or movement is one person who believed in an idea passionately.
