Mahsa Soroudi holds a BFA in Visual Communication from Azad Art and Architecture University, Tehran. She is a self described artist and independent art curator. She states that her work focuses on topics that are thought provoking and hopefully spur further exploration beyond the exhibition itself.
Nature’s Cadence is inherently beautiful as it is comprised of nature itself. Budding succulents are the main focus of this piece. Their green color communicate to the audience to ponder the meaning of growth. Additionally the small propagated succulent buds, when ready, grow small red roots to signal that they are ready to be planted and grow even more. There are many small buds waiting for their turn to be planted.
Soroudi explains that this project is a metaphor for her experience adjusting to life in the United States. She moved from Iran to the United States and feared she would never settle into her new life abroad. However, Soroudi states that the slow process that succulents go through when they are propagated emulates the experience she went through trying to “plant roots” in the United States.
I think Nature’s Cadence is a beautiful metaphor for many slow processes humans go through. Resettling, learning a new skill, building a family – all of these things have many moving parts that must all take root before a final product can be observed. The same is true with Nature’s Cadence. Many succulent buds are propagated, however in due time most if not all of the buds will grow roots and flourish. This process of taking root requires time and patience but is worth it in the end.
