Wk 6 – Shocking Art!

I chose this idea because I find that so many people, myself included, shy away from the idea of being alone or feeling alone. However, I believe there is so much beautiful work to be done when one is alone and it is only when we are truly alone that we may discover how truly powerful and strong we are.

I wanted to convey the idea that ultimately we are alone in this world. The world is magnificent and wonderful as depicted via the rainbow color scheme of the background of the painting yet we are still alone in it. The human figure is in a position of contemplation and reflection, a key aspect of getting the most out of ones time spent alone. Often times we are afraid to look introspectively. Perhaps we are afraid of what we might see or fearful that we won’t like who we are. But when we can reflect and learn to accept ourselves as we are I think true confidence is born.

I think I was somewhat successful. The idea of being alone is represented well with the lone figure in the middle of the drawing. I contemplated adding text above or below the figure reading “ALONE” but thought it may distract from the imagery of the figure being truly alone amidst the color of the painting.

If I were to recreate this project I would definitely do it on a larger canvas. A larger canvas has the potential to make the figure in the middle seem even smaller and more solitary. Another option would have been to use a smaller paint brush to paint the figure.

Another concept to explore under the “Shocking Art” category would be the idea that women are strong and capable even in their feminine forms. So often women and those who present as mainly female are not seen as competent because our society heavily values masculinity. For some situations and careers society sees masculinity as the only qualified option when really anyone could successfully achieve the prospective goal.
